Action Inishowen - Background Information

Action Inishowen was established in 1993 and is part of a strong network of over 90 projects all over the country, which act as community development Resource Projects or Centres in communities affected by high unemployment, poverty and disadvantage. The network called the Community Development Programme (C.D.P.) established in 1990, is the first nationally funded programme of community development. Funding is provided by the Department of Social Welfare through the Combat Poverty Agency on Lottery funding. Although all the programmes in the C.D.P. have a number of essential core characteristics the projects involved have a wide variety of individual aims, activities and target groups depending on the particular needs of the area and the community that they serve. Through its Resource Centre, Action Inishowen provides administrative resources, support, information and advice to individuals and groups on a wide range of issues.
Action Inishowen was established in 1993 to concentrate on social development in the peninsula. The target groups identified include Lone Parents, Long Term Unemployed, Elderly, Early School Leavers, Women and Pre-school Play Groups.

Aims and objectives

The overall aim of the programme is to reduce marginalisation of these particular groups by giving them a voice and empowering them to become involved as active agents in the development of their community. Objectives include:

  • To enable the disadvantaged in the community to take advantage of the activities being run by the project.
  • To provide locally based information, resources and support to individuals, groups and the community in general.
  • To empower individuals and groups by extending their access to resources, skills and influence.
  • To bring people together and facilitate their participation in identifying needs and designing action programmes to respond to those needs.
  • To initiate and support groups responding to local felt needs and problems.
  • To encourage networking and act as a focus point for social development.
  • The various projects initiated by Action Inishowen focus on enhancing social inclusion of the target groups.
